raspberries

The raspberry plant is a deciduous, thorny shrub with a green, palm-like shape, with compound leaves and can reach up to 2 meters in height. The raspberry plant is of temperate areas that can also be cultivated in other northern areas. Its scientific name is Rubus idaeus and was given by the great botanist Carl von Linne in the 18th century in memory of the Ancient Pliny. According to tradition, as Pliny states, raspberries were originally white. The nymph Idi, who was the daughter of the king of Crete and a feeder of the god Zeus, one day wanted to gather raspberries and give them to Zeus. While gathering the raspberries she wounded her breast with a thorn in the plant, causing the fruit to change color and to become red. Pliny states in his natural history that this shrub grows only on Mount Idi of Crete and therefore named it Rubus idaeus.
